start by opening the run box:
in there, put in REGEDIT.EXE and click OK
You will see a "tree view" on the left and a "properties" window on the right
on the left, left-click on "HKEY_CURRENT_USER" and open the folder.. (called a "key")
Now click on "SOFTWARE" and open that...
Next, click on "MICROSOFT"
then "MULTIMEDIA"
then "AUDIO"
and finally "WAVE FORMATS"
the name/location you should be at is:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Multimedia\Audio\WaveFormats
Now, notice on the right:
(Default) REG_SZ (value not set)
CD quality REG_BINARY 0100020044ac01...etc
radio quality REG_BINARY 0100020022500... etc
telephone quality REG_BINARY 01000100... etc
start by left-clicking ONCE on "CD quality" then RIGHT-click and seclect "rename"...
you will RENAME this to PCM (all upper case)
once you have renamed "CD Quality" to "PCM"...
now left-click on "radio quality" and then right-click and choose DELETE and delete the "radio quality" string value
also delete the "Telephone Quality" string value
remember!!
BE EXTREMELY CAREFUL and DO NOT ACCIDENTALLY DELETE "CD QUALITY" ( or renamed ) "PCM" STRING VALUE
now you should only see the following under the key: WAVE FORMATS
(HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Multimedia\Audio\WaveFormats)
(Default) REG_SZ (value not set)
PCM REG_BINARY 0100020044ac01...etc
next, return to the tree-view on the left side of your screen and LEFT-click TWICE on the folder called "AUDIO"
(HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Multimedia\Audio)
You should see the following:
(Default) REG_SZ (value not set)
DefaultFormats REG_SZ Radio Quality
SystemFormats REG_SZ CD Quality, Radio Quality, Tel... etc
Now left-click on "DefaultFormat" key twice to open the edit dialouge box..
change the "Value data" field from "radio Quality" to "PCM" (no quotes)
then click "OK"
next, left-click twice "SystemFormats" and change its "Value Data" field to "PCM" as well...
when you are done, you should see the following:
(HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Multimedia\Audio)
(Default) REG_SZ (value not set)
DefaultFormats REG_SZ PCM
SystemFormats REG_SZ PCM
next, return back to the tree-view on the left, and seclect the "audio" folder so that it is now highlighted (blue box with inverted text). and then press your left arrow key repeatedly untill all the folders "collapse" onto themselves and that all that remains on the tree-view is "my computer" (or your computer's name if you renamed your computer)
You have successfully completed the first part of this mod...
PART TWO...
Now seclect from the tree view.. HKEY_USERS
Then seclect DEFAULT
Next, SOFTWARE
Then, MICROSOFT
Then, MULTIMEDIA
followed by AUDIO
and then WAVE FORMATS
Does this look familliar? Can you guess what you will do next? YOU GUESSED IT!
You will do the EXACT SAME THING as you did in part one!
You will rename "CD Quality" to "PCM" (no quotes!) and delete "Radio Quality" and "Telephone Quality"
Then return back to "AUDIO" and change "DefaultFormat" and "SystemFormats" to "PCM" (refer to part one, above, for detailed instructions for these procedures)
(note! some of you might find that Windows has ALREADY did it FOR you.. this is OKAY! and EXPECTED.. but some of you might have to go through the procedure for this section again, and thats still OKay... The reason for this is due to how windows was installed, and/or security/update controls were set up...)
Now, last step... once again, left-click on "AUDIO" in the tree-view and press your left arrow key repeatedly to fully collapse the folders onto themselves untill only "my computer" is showing as the only folder left THIS IS IMPORTANT and MUST be done to "shore up" the regestry and update it.
Now close REGEDIT and reboot your computer...
when you return, you will now open "windows sound recorder" and click on file/properties... you should now see "default properties" show:
44.100 Khz 16 Bit Stereo
if you see this, you are set!
NOTE: if an error message pops up stating that "another program has changed internal settings and would you like sound recorder to set them back [y/n]" ...SECLECT NO! do NOT allow sound recorder to reset the setting you just painstakingly did!!
close windows sound recorder.. (do not save any files or settings within)
