AW: Jack FM

At Jack FM, the DJs still are gone, but the playlist is long
By Brandon Griggs
The Salt Lake Tribune

A month ago in this space, I described my less-than-thrilled reaction to Jack FM, the new pop-rock station that replaced KJQ at 103.1 FM on the Salt Lake dial. Undeterred by my grumblings, the folks at Simmons Media, who own Jack FM, asked to meet with me about the format change.

Fair enough. Here's what they had to say:

The decision to pull the plug on retro-alternative station KJQ was several months in the making, they said. Ratings were lagging, and KJQ's ad revenue had declined for more than six months in a row. Firing KJQ's three DJs on short notice was a difficult but necessary part of the change, said program director Ian McCain.

"That was the hardest thing," said McCain, who received more than 160 phone calls and e-mails from listeners complaining about the demise of KJQ. "But when you launch a new brand, you can't keep the same DJs on. It could cause mass confusion."

In casting about for a new format, Simmons settled on "Jack," a rising brand of FM station that draws from more than three decades of pop, classic rock and alternative-rock genres. Salt Lake's Jack FM becomes the fifth Jack station in the country, following successful Jack launches in Austin, Dallas, Denver and Oklahoma City.

Jack's music tends to be upbeat and varied: Listeners may hear Madonna's "Vogue" followed by the Scorpions' "Rock You Like a Hurricane" followed by OutKast's "Hey Ya!" The station plays no current hits, preferring to spin proven crowd-pleasers from the past.

Most Salt Lake music stations have fewer than 600 songs in rotation at any one time, while Jack FM has more than 1,200, McCain said, adding, "over 50 percent of what we play is not heard on other stations in this market right now."

As an example, he cited Michael Jackson's "Beat It," a monster hit 20 years ago that has since fallen through the format cracks. Jack FM's playlist is filled with such "guilty pleasure" hits that older listeners may not have heard for years.

Almost two months after Jack FM debuted, Simmons has not hired DJs and has no immediate plans to do so. Instead, listeners hear recorded plugs for the station plus its snarky slogan, "Playing what we want." McCain concedes Jack FM's on-air attitude may turn some listeners off.

"But most people get the joke," he said. "Do you really think that [another Salt Lake City pop station, which I won't name here] plays your requests? Nobody does."

So is Jack FM scoring with listeners? Simmons won't know for sure until Arbitron's second-quarter ratings come out in July. According to Simmons vice president Steve Johnson, "the beauty of this station is that it plays music that people know."

Well, beauty is in the ear of the beholder. I give Jack FM credit for its iPod-on-shuffle juxtaposition of musical styles. But I still prefer stations that aren't afraid to play songs listeners haven't already heard a gazillion times.
