adult R&B: R&B hits without rap and hip hop music; often mixing older R&B hits of the 70s, 80s, and 90s
adult top 40: station between AC and top 40, but closer to top 40 musically
alternative: generally non-commerical, college-run outlets playing cutting edge music generally not found on other stations, including commerical modern rock outlets; may include some punk, industrial, and heavy metal music in the mix
Americana: mixture of AAA, blues, and progressive country music
black gospel: religious music typically heard in predominately black churches
Christian rock: rock-driven alternative or harder rock Christian-themed music

classic country: pre-1980s country music
classic hits: generally 70s rock and pop hits based stations that tend to be hybrids of the oldies and classic rock formats
classic rock: album rock oldies generally from the 70s forward and maybe including some current rock; may also include some "rockin' hits" outlets that mix classic rock with some modern AC material that are too hard (in terms of classic rock library) and too personality-driven to fall under the mellower rock AC format
classical: classical music, opera, fine arts programming
contemporary Christian: pop/contemporary Christian-themed music
dance top 40: top 40 stations that focus almost exclusively on non-rock top 40 hits; music often a mixture of R&B, rap, dance, and pop; "rhythmic top 40" outlets
easy listening: primarily non-vocal instrumental music
hot AC: station between AC and top 40, excluding softer, mellow AC music and rap
jazz: traditional "real" jazz
modern AC: hybrid of the hot AC and modern rock formats; modern rock hits and often with retro 80s modern rock without harder edge alternative music
modern rock: mainstream alternative rock music
oldies: 50s-70s: top 40s hits generally from that era; 80s: top 40 pop hits from the late 70s-early 90s; modern rock: 80s retro modern rock hits; R&B: R&B hits typically from the 50s-70s
religious: preaching and instructional religious programming; may include some music
religious talk: religious-based talk programming that may be mixed with some secular conservative talk programming
R&B: contemporary R&B hits, rap, hip-hop
rhythmic AC: hybrid of where hot AC and dance musically intersects
rhythmic oldies: mixture of R&B oldies, disco, and 70s dance music; "jammin' oldies"
rock: album-oriented rock (AOR)
rock AC: AC-AOR hybrids that are soft, mellow classic rock stations that typically do not play harder classic rock material; often music-focussed with little DJ chatter; format came in during the late 80s and the early 90s before rapidly dying out except for a handful of stations today
smooth jazz: softer AC and light jazz music; format came in during the late 80s often focussing on new age music, which is now not featured on most of these outlets; almost always excludes traditional jazz music
soft AC: softer, non-rock, and generally non-current, AC music; often music-focussed with verly little DJ chatter
southern gospel: country-based religious muisc
sports: play-by-play and sports talk show programming
standards: popular non-rock hits from the 30s-60s, often including big band music
top 40: contemporary hit music (CHR)
top 40-rock: top 40 music without the R&B and dance crossovers; "rock 40"
variety: station has numerous blocks of time devoted to different formats
